I've been knitting for a while now, I think 2 and 1/2 years maybe (yikes!). It all started one crappy New England winter night while I was home on winter break from college, when I decided there was literally nothing to do in my town and that I'd better get a semi-active hobby, one that I could do while doing something else (such as huddling under blankets watching bad tv). I marched right out to the nearest Michaels the next day and purchased an irritatingly named booklet called I can't believe I'm Knitting (the waaay too happy woman on the cover can be found here (http://www.amazon.com/Cant-Believe-Knitting-Leisure-Arts/dp/1574866281)
At any rate I picked up most of the basic steps just fine using that book (such as casting on, knitting etc.), but eventually had to have one of my mother's friends show me how to purl. I soon became a more saavy knitting reader and discarded my bland booklet for Stitch n' Bitch from which I eagerly knitted away at my first project, the Ribbed-for-her-pleasure-scarf that came out looking like this, and I was happy to discover, is completely wearable!
